In Rwanda, Joséphine Mukangarambe has developed her own fruit tree nursery, with over 30,000 avocado trees, as well as mango, apple and passion fruit trees…
The nursery is a plot of land set aside for the propagation of plants and their cultivation until they reach the stage where they can be transplanted and marketed.
Joséphine Mukangarambe’s work is affected by climate change: heavy rains have destroyed her plantations, with economic and material consequences.
In particular, she needs a sturdy greenhouse, as the canvas one has not withstood the elements.
Since 2020, this agricultural entrepreneur has been able to access financing thanks to Duterimberea partner of SIDI.
She has already taken out two loans and plans to take out a new one to install a good irrigation system.
Duterimbere stands out for its social approach: the organization’s activity began in 1987 as an NGO offering savings services to women. In 2004, the NGO was transformed into a company, but the majority shareholding remained with the NGO. Its mission remains unchanged: to provide adapted financial services to low-income entrepreneurs, mainly women, in order to improve their socio-economic conditions.
Joséphine Mukangarambe, for example, attended a financial education course organized by Duterimbere. She has also received technical training from the Rwanda Agricultural Board, which supports and advises her in marketing her produce. She now hopes to expand her business by creating an orchard from the seedlings grown in the nursery, with a view to harvesting the fruit.
Seven people now work alongside Joséphine Mukangarambe, contributing to the local economic fabric.
