The origins of MC Ingredients date back to 2023, when the founders of Madagascar Consulting sought to diversify their core business – focused on vanilla and cloves on the east coast – into other structured value chains, such as paprika, ginger and pulses/legumes. MC Ingredients sources from around 2,000 small producers across the island. MC Ingredients’ mission is to ‘shorten the supply chain by facilitating closer links between customers and suppliers’ in order to ‘create more sustainable supply chains’.
Despite its considerable natural resources, Madagascar has one of the highest poverty rates in the world: 80% of the island’s inhabitants live below the poverty line, 85% of them in rural areas. Madagascar’s economy is based primarily on agriculture. The country is also highly vulnerable to climate change. The Tulear region, where MCI is developing its legume and dry grain sectors, is particularly susceptible to cyclones and has a higher poverty rate than the rest of the country.
With a network of 2,000 producers across the island, including in remote areas (east and south-west coast), MCI contributes to the development of income-generating family farming. MCI also has a focus on gender equality: between 15% and 20% of producers are women.
