Partner description

Microloan Foundation Malawi is a microfinance institution founded in 2002. It is overseen by Microloan Foundation UK, a British charity that manages a network of three subsidiaries in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia. Microloan Foundation’s approach consists of offering small loans and training to women. The MFI thus enables the most vulnerable populations to start their own economic activities.

Country and/or business sector context

With a GDP per capita of $645 in 2022, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. The country suffers from being landlocked and its economy is very poorly diversified, making it particularly dependent on the agricultural sector and thus extremely vulnerable to external shocks and the effects of climate change (price volatility, extreme weather events, epidemics, etc.).

Partner impact

MLF Malawi caters exclusively to women living in rural areas. Its products are tailored to serve the most vulnerable. To this end, very small loans are provided, specifically those below $100.
