ACPCU is the largest coffee producers’ cooperative union in Uganda, bringing together 26 cooperatives from the west of the country that process and market robusta coffee from approximately 15,000 small member producers. Since 2006, the union has successfully obtained fair trade and organic production certifications thanks to its training and monitoring services for producers and its investment in high-quality facilities.
Uganda is a relatively stable country politically, with significant and diverse agricultural potential and a predominantly young population. It is not among the countries most at risk regarding climate change according to the Germanwatch ranking. The lack of political turnover, inequalities resulting from corruption (ranked 146th out of 180 by Transparency International for corruption perception) and economic policy (few infrastructures, public services, and redistribution mechanisms), low industrialization, the absence of environmental policy, as well as its inclusion on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, constitute the main risk factors or limitations for this country, which is ranked 166th out of 189 according to the Human Development Index.
The commercial relationships, certifications, and high-quality facilities offered by ACPCU make it possible to obtain better prices (11 to 15% higher than the Ugandan average depending on the certification and the year), as well as better operational efficiency, and consequently, better remuneration for producers. The latter also benefit from free training and monitoring services as well as the provision of seeds, and even assistance in accessing health and education services. Particular attention is paid to gender and age with specific actions to promote the inclusion of women and young people.
