Beni Ghreb is an SME specialising in the packaging and export of biodynamically produced dates. It is based in the Hazoua oasis in southern Tunisia, near the border with Algeria. Beni Ghreb was founded by a family of farmers and is the first company to have exported organic dates in Tunisia. Following financial difficulties due in particular to the COVID crisis, SIDI decided to acquire a stake in the company in order to try to turn it around.
Tunisia was the first country of the ‘Arab Spring’ to initiate a peaceful democratisation process, which gradually faded in recent years before finally culminating in the election of an authoritarian president who suspended the gains of the revolution. The country has few natural resources and survives on tourism and remittances from a diaspora that has sought exile in Europe in recent years.
Beni Ghreb is a company with a strong social and environmental mission that benefits the inhabitants of the Hazoua oasis. Organic certification allows producers to benefit from higher purchase prices for their dates. Beni Ghreb has developed a programme to regenerate the oasis’s traditional ecosystem based on agroforestry and has developed sprinkler irrigation systems, which save 70% of water consumption.
