Partner description

COOCEC Kivu is an umbrella organization (federation) of savings and credit cooperatives (COOPEC) founded more than 50 years ago. It is based on a local service model, prioritizing savings services for the largest possible number of members. The network’s eight COOPECs are established in rural areas around the provincial capital (Bukavu) and primarily offer individual loans. These loans are largely directed towards trade, including agricultural credit. The federation provides the COOPECs with training, resource management (savings/credit), and oversight services.

Country and/or business sector context

Initially involved in the former Kivu with up to 45 COOPECs, the network has now refocused its activities on the South Kivu province, while former COOPECs from the network continue their development independently.

The environments in which COOCEC operates and grows are complex, particularly outside urban centers: infrastructure problems, insecurity caused by armed conflicts…

Partner impact

Nearly 20,000 customers of 08 COOPECs benefit from the services of the network’s COOPECs. Half of these COOPECs operate in rural areas that are difficult to access.
