Partner description

FECCEG, based in western Guatemala, started out as an NGO bringing together around ten coffee production cooperatives. Thanks to international cooperation projects, it is building a coffee sorting and packaging plant. Its aim is to add value to the products of Indian communities, while supporting the production of healthy food for consumers and the environment.

Country and/or business sector context

Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America, but also the most culturally diverse and the one with the most dynamic economy. Its development was long hampered after the civil war of the 1980s by an alliance between the army, conservative sectors and oligarchs, leading to endemic corruption. It is a very unequal country: between Guatemala City and the rest of the country, between the many indigenous communities and the mestizos.

Partner impact

By collecting coffee, thanks to the strong ties with member cooperatives, and often offering double the price offered by intermediaries (thanks to organic and fair trade certifications), the FECCEG adds value to the main cash crop of small local producers. But all this is done in the service of providing comprehensive support to communities in the production of organic food, while preserving the diversification of plots (maize, squash, beans, mangoes, bananas, avocados, etc.).
