Kitagata Mixed Famers Cooperative is a cooperative owned by farmers who wanted to support the
socio-economic development of their communities. The main crops produced by members of the cooperative are cassava, beans and millet. Members also produce soybeans, corn, coffee and bananas. The cooperative supports the wider community by also buying produce from non-member farmers at a higher price than the farm-gate price.
With a population of 48 million, Uganda is East Africa’s third-largest economy after Kenya and Tanzania. After going through a difficult period until the 1980s, the country has achieved remarkable economic performance in recent decades. Uganda has managed the post-pandemic recovery well and remained resilient in the face of global economic challenges. Agriculture remains the backbone of the Ugandan economy, employing 66% of the population, with coffee being one of the main export commodities. Despite this positive trend, poverty persists, with 60% of the population living below the global threshold of £3 PPP/day.
The cooperative focuses on providing quality inputs to smallholder farmers, particularly women, training in improved agricultural techniques, and helping them find markets for their agricultural products. The cooperative’s activities aim to improve the social, economic, and environmental resilience of smallholder households across different value chains by increasing production and marketing.
