Microloan Foundation Zambia is a microfinance institution founded in 2002. It is supervised by Microloan Foundation UK, a British charitable organization. Currently managing a network of three subsidiaries in Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia, Microloan Foundation offers small loans and training to women. It thus targets the most vulnerable populations, enabling them to create their own businesses.
According to Oxfam International, 64% of the population in Zambia lives below the poverty line. With a GDP per capita of $1,157 in 2021, the country is ranked 154th out of 191 nations (2021) according to the Human Development Index (HDI). Poorly developed infrastructure and an increased climate risk from droughts and torrential rains in the south make Zambia a particularly vulnerable country. Access to capital is difficult, characterized by a high cost of debt and significant currency fluctuations.
MLF Zambia has a very strong social profile and operates exclusively with women in rural areas, who are particularly excluded from access to bank financing. Beyond its mission, MLF Zambia is committed to better monitoring the impact of its actions on its clients, making the management of social and environmental performance a strategic objective for the 2021-2025 period.
