Rushere SACCO is a savings and credit cooperative whose mission, renewed in 2004, is to provide financial services to the active rural and poor populations of Rushere and the surrounding areas of the Kiruhura district. Established as a company with share capital owned by shareholders from Nyabushozi County, Rushere now has over 18,000 active members in western Uganda. The western part of Uganda is renowned for the ability of its residents to organize themselves to achieve collective goals.
With a population of 48 million, Uganda is the third-largest economy in East Africa, after Kenya and Tanzania. After going through a difficult period until the 1980s, the country has achieved impressive economic performance over the last few decades. Uganda managed the post-pandemic recovery well and has remained resilient in the face of global economic challenges. Agriculture remains the backbone of the Ugandan economy, employing 66% of the population, with coffee being one of the main export resources. Despite this positive trend, poverty persists, with 60% of the population living below the global threshold of $3 PPP/day.
The cooperative aims to provide financial services to the active and poor rural populations of the Rushere community and the surrounding Kiruhura district. Over the years, Rushere SACCO has positioned itself as a model of financial empowerment, enabling individuals and communities to improve their livelihoods through accessible savings and credit services. By embracing innovation and expanding its reach, the SACCO has not only enhanced financial literacy but has also cultivated a strong sense of ownership and cooperation among its members.
