Partner description

Yehu was founded in 1998 by Choice Humanitarian, an international NGO based in the USA. Yehu began its activities by organizing women’s groups and facilitating their savings in Kwale County, in Kenya’s Coastal Province. In 2014, Yehu became a limited liability company, with the NGO Yehu Microfinance Trust becoming the majority shareholder with an 88% stake. Currently, Yehu operates 16 branches serving over 70,000 customers, mainly women organized in solidarity groups.

Country and/or business sector context

Although it is among the most developed African countries, Kenya has been suffering for several years from a crisis linked to several factors: COVID-19, inflation, drought, an uncertain electoral period, high external debt, and monetary instability. In 2024, the “Gen Z” younger generation rose up against corruption and poor governance. Despite these rather cyclical conditions, the country remains highly attractive and at the forefront of microfinance, digital technologies, and innovation in Africa in general.

Partner impact

Yehu focuses on the empowerment of socio-economically marginalized rural entrepreneurs by providing them with financial education and financing for business creation and development. This is achieved through loan products in the following areas: agriculture, green energy, micro-insurance, water and sanitation, and education, thereby improving their social and economic well-being.
