Coprobich is a cooperative of organic and fair-trade quinoa producers that has existed since 2003. Its 530 members come from 53 communities located in the rural areas around Riobamba, in the Andean province of Chimborazo, where approximately 80% of the population lives off agriculture and livestock. All members are Puruha Indians (Quechua culture) who cultivate, among other things, quinoa, a plant native to the Andean regions.
Ecuador is one of the smallest countries in South America, but it possesses significant economic potential, with mining and hydrocarbon reserves, as well as rich agricultural and marine resources. Nevertheless, the country suffers from significant social instability: strikes regularly shake the country due to the cost of living and the demands of indigenous peoples who feel neglected. Furthermore, overcrowding in Ecuadorian prisons is leading to an increase in violence attributed to drug traffickers.
Coprobich contributes to the socio-economic development of small-scale producers in Chimborazo, the most indigenous, rural, and poorest region of the country. It also participates in environmental protection by promoting the culture and expertise of indigenous communities. Its social impact is demonstrated through the valorization of farmers’ production by improving quality and providing better market access, particularly within the frameworks of fair trade and organic farming.
